Shillong, August 17: Devastating wildfires that ignited on August 8 in Hawaii’s Maui Island have led to a tragic death toll of 110, announced Governor Josh Green as per  Xinhua news agency.

The search for victims continues, with 38% of the burned area explored so far. The fires have ravaged around 2,200 structures, primarily residences, causing either complete destruction or significant damage.

The historic town of Lahaina in Maui fell victim to these wildfires, marking the deadliest blaze in modern US history. Nearly 2,000 customers remain without power in the affected regions.

In response, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden plan to visit Maui on August 21, extending support to first responders, survivors, and officials dealing with the aftermath of the calamity. The President expressed his commitment to aiding Hawaii’s recovery.

Amidst these developments, Hawaiian Electric is confronting a lawsuit linking toppled power lines to the Lahaina wildfire’s cause. However, the definitive source of the destructive blaze is yet to be determined.”
