Shillong, August 20: Intel, a leading chip manufacturer, is making additional staff cuts in the US, shedding around 140 employees to streamline expenses.

Of these, 89 employees at the Folsom R&D campus and 51 in San Jose, California, will be affected. The layoff plan has been reported to state employment authorities and is set to take effect by the end of the month, as reported by Sacramento Inno.

As per IANS, among the positions being cut are 10 GPU software development engineers, eight system software development engineers, six cloud software engineers, six product marketing engineers, and six system-on-chip design engineers, among others.

This latest round of layoffs adds to nearly 500 positions eliminated from the Folsom R&D campus this year alone. As of early 2022, Intel had 5,300 employees in Folsom, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. The Folsom campus has been instrumental in various research and development activities, encompassing SSDs, graphics processors, software, and chipsets.

Earlier this year, Intel confirmed plans to reduce its workforce to mitigate costs amid a challenging macro-economic environment. The exact number of employees to be impacted by the upcoming layoffs has not been disclosed by the company.

An Intel spokesperson stated, “We are focused on identifying cost reductions and efficiency gains through multiple initiatives, including some business and function-specific workforce reductions in areas across the company.”

According to reports, the semiconductor giant might reduce its workforce by up to 20 percent in its client computing and data center divisions.

In October of the previous year, Intel had announced intentions to curtail expenses by $3 billion within that year. Last fall, Intel had already laid off over 500 employees in California, as documented in filings with state workforce agencies.
