Shillong, August 21: India experienced a remarkable 120% growth in electric vehicles (EVs) during the second quarter of this year, primarily propelled by a significant 400% surge in hybrid vehicle adoption, as indicated by a report published on Monday.
The report by CyberMedia Research (CMR) reveals that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) also expanded rapidly, showing a 350% year-on-year growth. Additionally, the integration of connected and digital cockpit features in passenger vehicles has steadily gained traction, surpassing 60%.
The surge in EV adoption can be attributed to the introduction of more affordable models, such as the MG Comet EV by MG Motors.
John Martin, Senior Analyst in the smart mobility practice at CMR, explained, “Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are focused on introducing electric vehicles with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that include helpful features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automated lane changes.”
Moreover, the use of intelligent and connected cockpits within vehicles has been on the rise, enhancing both consumer safety and promoting intelligent mobility and environmental sustainability.
The report highlights that the surge in hybrid vehicle demand was propelled by manufacturers like Toyota Kirloskar, Maruti Suzuki, and Honda Motors.
During Q2 2023, over 90% of EV sales were equipped with smart connected features, and digital cockpits were incorporated in about 15% of hybrid vehicles.
By the year’s end, it is anticipated that over 5% of passenger vehicles will be fully electric and equipped with ADAS features. Additionally, advanced connectivity and digital cockpit functionalities are projected to capture a market share of 40%.
