Unscrupulous parking fees
Parking your vehicle in the city has become mentally demanding for commuters — firstly because of the paucity of space and the second and the more vexing reason is unregulated parking fees, especially when it is charged unscrupulously.
You may choose to park your vehicle at a designated location but land yourself in a problem when the collector announces the exorbitant parking fees. This practice not only is unethical but also raises questions on why these services are not well regulated in the city.
MUDA Parking Lot charges Rs 30 per hour for a car, while Rs 10 an hour for two-wheelers, but imagine being charged almost triple the amount. It would definitely raise eyebrows, but somehow this has remained unchecked. Complaints about such malpractices keep coming to the fore.
Another situation is non-issuance of receipts, which beckons the question: Can the collector be a poser, plundering people’s money on the pretext of parking fees?
There is a clarion call for parking fees to be regulated across the city, which would ensure parity and nip any attempt to overcharge commuters in the bud.

Solar-powered streetlights standing on the picturesque lane-divider at Khyndai Lad are non-functional. This photo taken on Thursday speaks volumes about how Shillong’s infrastructure needs more attention to be able to turn itself into a smart city. (ST)
