Shillong, September 6: Over 36,000 residents in Fuzhou, the capital of China’s Fujian province, have been temporarily evacuated due to the impact of typhoon Haikui, which has brought heavy rainstorms to the region, according to authorities’ reports on Wednesday.

As per IANS, as of 7 am Wednesday, torrential rains had caused damage in 147 townships within the city, resulting in a direct economic loss exceeding 552 million yuan ($76 million), as confirmed by the city’s flood control and drought relief headquarters.

Beginning from 9 p.m. on Tuesday, several areas in the city experienced intense rainstorms, with the cumulative precipitation between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday breaking the previous three-hour and six-hour maximum rainfall records at the Wushan national weather station, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

In response to the situation, primary schools, middle schools, kindergartens, and extracurricular training institutions remained closed on Wednesday. Urban buses, subways, trains, and airport shuttle buses temporarily halted their operations, and resorts and parks were also temporarily shut down.

Fujian province elevated its emergency response for heavy rains to Level II at 11 p.m. on Tuesday.
