WJH district open badminton C’ship concludes

JOWAI, Sep 10: The 14th District Open Badminton Championship organised by West Jaintia Hills District Badminton Association at Seinraij Indoor Sports Hall, Tpepale Jowai came to an end on Sunday. Oh Toi President Seinraij Jowai graced the function as the chief guest in the presence of WJDBA members including JM Pohsngap President, M Nongpluh Secretary amongst others. Champions in the various categories include: Ribhalang Passah (Women’s Singles), Josefina Dala Passah and Pretty Mary Sumer (Women’s Double), Teddy Laloo (50+ men’s Singles), Lalnunsiama and Ambrose Gathphoh (Men’s Doubles), Josefina Dala Pasah and Mebanker Chullai (Mixed Doubles), Mebanker Chullai (Men’s Singles Open), Buromlangki Lakiang and Deilang wa-o Nongpluh ( Men’s Doubles Open ) whereas in (Mens Doubles 35+) Dr. Peterson L Lamare and Deymeniv Shullai bagged the winning trophy.

 

Sumit Nagal finishes second
NEW DELHI, Sep 10: Sumit Nagal had to be content with a runner-up finish at the ATP Tulln Challenger event after losing the singles title clash in straight sets to Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva on Sunday.Competing in his third Challenger level final, Nagal lost 2-6 4-6 to his rival, who is ranked five places below him at 194.Nagal struggled with his serve and lost his cool in the opening set when he lost a game after being up 40-0. Frustrated at losing the game, he banged his racquet on the court, breaking it in a jiffy.The Czech earned match points with a backhand winner and closed the contest with a forehand winner Nagal had won the Rome (April) and Tampere (July) Challenger events early this year. Athletics: Ngetich breaks women only world 10kwm record
BRASOV (Romania), Sep 10: Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich broke the women-only world 10km race record at the Transylvania 10km racing meet, clocking 29:24 at the World Athletics Elite Label road race held on Sunday as part of the Brasov Running Festival.In an impressive solo running display, the 22-year-old showed her intent from the start and covered the first 5km in 14 minutes 25 seconds – four seconds faster than the women-only world record for that distance.She had a lead of 10 seconds ahead of her compatriot Catherine Reline at that point. Antony takes leave of absence from Man Utd to address allegations
MANCHESTER, Sep 10: Manchester United winger Antony has been given a leave of absence in order to address allegations made against him of violence towards women.The 23-year-old player earlier this week was dropped from the Brazil squad after accusations of physical aggression on several occasions since January towards his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, which are being investigated by police and which he denies.United have agreed with the player for him to stay away from the club in order to focus on defending himself. Antony has not been arrested or charged and says he will co-operate with police in order to prove his innocence. United, who have not suspended Antony, will continue to monitor the situation as it develops, with Erik ten Hag consulted on the decision. (PTI)

 

Nicolas Pepe leaves Arsenal
LONDON, Sept 10: Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pepe has left Arsenal to join Turkish club Trabzonspor, with the Premier League side saying on Saturday that they had terminated his contract.Arsenal signed the 28-year-old from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2019 for a then club-record fee of 72 million pounds, which was broken when they signed West Ham United’s England midfielder Declan Rice for 105 million pounds in July. The Turkish Super League club posted a video on their X account,showing Pepe on a private jet saying: “I came here to become a champion and achieve success”.“We can confirm that Nicolas Pepe is leaving the club. We have agreed with him to terminate his contract with immediate effect,” Arsenal said in a statement. Pepe scored 27 goals in 112 games for the Gunners and spent last season on loan at French side Nice, where he made 28 appearances and scored eight times last season. Trabzonspor are seventh in the Turkish Super League. (Agencies)
