SHILLONG, Oct 1: Five persons sustained injuries in a blast at a scrap shop in the busy Keating Road area of the capital city on Sunday.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger told reporters that some workers were breaking spray cans and smoking at the same time causing the inflammable liquid in the spray cans to catch fire and explode.
The fire from the blast engulfed the building in thick black smoke. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and contained the fire.
The five injured workers — Neshan Singh, Billal Hussain, Nur Mohammad Khan, Sam Mohammad and Kamal Uddin — were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
Initially it was suspected that an LPG cylinder had exploded but police denied the same.
