SHILLONG, Oct 10: State government data has showed that basic amenities such as electricity, library and toilets can still be found wanting in most of the schools in Meghalaya.
As many as 2,658 schools (18 per cent) do not have girls’ toilet, according to the data for FY2021-22 available on the dashboard of the Department of School Education and Literacy.
As far as girls’ toilet is concerned, the figure increases to 26% when it comes to government schools.
On the other hand, a little over 11,000 (76%) schools do not have a library, while 80 per cent of the private schools have also been found wanting of the facility.
The dash board also shows that almost 11,000 schools (75%) do not have a power connection.
When it comes to drinking water, the schools seem to be doing well as 53 per cent of the schools in the state have drinking water facilities.
Meanwhile, hand washing facilities are missing from 62% of the schools in the state, while 71% of them do not have any medical facilities.
According to the dashboard, there are as many as 14,600 schools in the state which include 7,783 government schools, 4,172 aided schools and 2,120 private schools.
In the state, there are 55,160 teachers including 22,901 government school teachers, 17,658 aided school teachers, and 12,209 private school teachers.
