Shillong, Oct 19: Shillong Lajong Football Club emerged as the champions of the 29th All India Bodofa U N Brahma Gold Cup Football Tournament 2023, following their impressive victory in the tournament’s final showdown held today in the Udalguri Nalbari playground.
The Shillong-based team secured their triumph with a 1-0 victory over ASEB Sports Club from Guwahati.In a thrilling match, Phrangki Buam stole the spotlight by scoring the solitary goal of the game during the first half. Lajong’s impeccable performance secured their victory in the prestigious tournament.Earlier in the semi-finals, ASEB Sports Club had overcome Nongrim Hills SSCC, while Shillong Lajong showcased their dominance by defeating Orgeng FC from Dimakuchi with a convincing 4-2 scoreline. The match saw Senegalese striker Karim Samb scoring a remarkable brace, with Brazilian sensation Renan Paulino and Captain Hardy Cliff Nongbri each contributing a goal. This triumph marks Shillong Lajong’s second tournament victory, having recently clinched the Chakradhar Deka Football Tournament in Assam. Coach Bobby Nongbet expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance during the pre-season matches, stating, “Yet another productive pre-season tournament here at Udalguri. A good exposure for the boys. A huge thumbs up to all the boys.”Looking ahead, Shillong Lajong is eager to maintain their impressive form in the upcoming I-League, set to commence later this month. Their first match is scheduled to take place away from home against Mohameddan Sporting on November 3, followed by a home fixture against Neroca FC on November 9, 2023.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions throughout the tournament, Phrangki Buam was awarded the prestigious title of the Best Player of the Tournament.
