Shillong, October 26: Google has globally rolled out the “About this image” fact-check tool in Search to assist English language users in finding reliable information about the images they come across online.
As per IANS, this tool provides an easy way for individuals to verify the credibility and context of online images.
Users can utilize this tool to delve into an image’s history, metadata, and the context in which it has been used on various websites.
Google explained, “You can access this tool by clicking on the three dots on an image in Google Images results, or by clicking ‘more about this page’ in the About this result tool on search results.”
The image’s history feature enables users to determine when an image was first discovered by Google Search and whether it was previously published on other webpages.
The metadata of an image, when available, reveals information added by image creators and publishers, including fields that indicate AI generation or enhancement.
Additionally, users can explore how the image is employed on other pages and find insights from sources such as news and fact-checking sites.
This information aids in assessing the claims associated with an image and considering evidence and perspectives from various sources.
In addition to the About this image tool, Google has introduced the ‘FaceCheck Claim Search API,’ allowing approved journalists and fact-checkers to upload or copy image URLs for further investigation.
Google has been testing features using the Fact Check Explorer tool, which empowers fact-checkers to explore fact-checks, references, and other details related to specific images.
