Sunesh Syiem, the newly elected General Secretary of the Meghalaya Football Association, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the development of football in the state. In an exclusive interview with The Shillong Times, he outlined his goals and strategies for transforming the state’s football landscape.
Syiem recognizes the importance of promoting women’s football, and he plans to suggest a state-level tournament for women to the Women’s Cell committee. This initiative aligns with the global momentum for women’s football.
“I will try to bring forth a suggestion to the committee to have a state-level tournament for women, and that shall then be put forward to the Executive Committee for its consideration and approval,” said Syiem.
One of the key strengths of Meghalaya’s football scene is its abundance of talent. However, there is a pressing need to develop football infrastructure, including the creation of more playing grounds and the organization of the much-anticipated Youth League. Syiem is committed to addressing these issues during his tenure.
In the short term, he aims to build a vibrant ecosystem for youth football in Meghalaya, organizing tournaments at district levels and regular state-level competitions. By fostering grassroots development, the state can tap into its rich tradition of football talent.
“We need to build an ecosystem among the youth of the state by having more tournaments at district levels and a follow-up program in having state-level competitions at regular intervals,” he added.
The diverse cultural and tribal background of Meghalaya will be honored through inclusive football development programs. Syiem believes that, with government support and the involvement of stakeholders and football enthusiasts, the game can thrive at the grassroots level.
“Football is in our genes. We look forward to the government, different stakeholders, and lovers of the game taking an active interest in developing the game in our state right from the grassroots level,” said Syiem.
Syiem’s journey in football leadership began as the Secretary of the Meghalaya Football Players Association, where he gained valuable insights into the needs and potential of football development among the youth in the state. His passion for the game and the encouragement he received from the former President, Larsing M. Sawyan, inspired him to take on the role of General Secretary.
Financial sustainability is crucial for any sports association. Syiem acknowledges the government’s support and aims to continue moving in the right direction to secure funding and sponsorship.
Engaging with local communities, fans, and supporters is a priority for Syiem. He plans to conduct regular workshops and seminars to foster interactions and encourage more tournaments for different age groups, promoting inclusivity and engagement.
Lastly, Shri Syiem intends to support the professional development of coaches, referees, and administrative staff involved in football in Meghalaya. The strengthened commit
tees within the MFA will work towards enhancing the game’s activities, bringing positive changes and improvements for the benefit of all involved.
“We need to strengthen the different committees that we have in the MFA. A proper administrative approach and decision are very important to enhance the activities of the MFA,” he concluded.
