Shillong, Nov 3: A local court on Friday remanded noted city businessman Suresh P Singh to seven days in police custody for allegedly stabbing his wife Poonam Singh recently.
The woman is still admitted at Shillong Civil Hospital.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that the accused had surrendered before the officer-in-charge of Laban police station on Friday morning and was arrested.
He was later produce before the court. The accused had moved a bail which was opposed by the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), Nurina N Lyngdoh.
The public prosecutor said that she had opposed the bail to allow the investigating officer to properly investigate the case.
‘The crime committed by the accused is a serious offence’, she said.
“We fear that he might commit the same offence,” Lyngdoh added.
Stating that the daughter is the eyewitness since the victim was stabbed in her presence, the APP said that there are possibilities that the accused might tried to threaten the eyewitness if he is given bail.
She also revealed that the investigating officer is yet to recover the weapon used by the accused to commit the crime adding that this clearly indicates that tampering of evidence has already taken place.
The public prosecutor also informed that a case under Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code has been filed.
It may be mentioned that the accused is one of the directors of The Shillong Club and a senior member of Rotary Club and other philanthropic organisation.
He is also the owner of the Basgitram Hardware in Anjalee.
