SHILLONG, Nov 9: KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem on Thursday expressed concern over schooling being limited to Upper Primary level in several remote villages in the region.
Syiem was speaking at a function to inaugurate the Food Festival-cum-Variety Sale of Mawroh Secondary School on Thursday.
Stating that as an MDC of a rural constituency, he has come across many such schools, Syiem said that children from villages which have schools that can only offer education up to the primary level have to discontinue their studies after Class VII.
“Many of them cannot afford to go to another village to continue their studies in higher classes,” he said.
Syiem said that he understands the importance to strengthen the infrastructure of the schools.
He further recalled that primary education was an area overseen by the district councils “but the state government took over after the Council was unable to clear the salaries of the teachers.”
He added that all the schools need not be upgraded to secondary section as per the National Education Policy 2020.
Earlier, Syiem had inspected the Mawroh Secondary School which caters to around 300 underprivileged children from the locality and its adjoining areas.
The KHADC CEM acknowledged that the school needs assistance since it takes a minimal monthly fee of Rs 100 from children.
He assured that the Council will explore the resources which are available to help the school.
