Mawkyrwat, Nov 11: Former Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) president, Robertjune Kharjahrin formally joined the UDP at a meeting held at the office of the UDP Mawkyrwat Circle in Mawkyrwat on Saturday.
Kharjahrin was welcomed into the party by Mawkyrwat MLA and UDP working president, Renikton L Tongkhar in the presence of UDP’s Mawkyrwat Circle president, Shainkor Nongsiej and other leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Kharjahrin said his family has been associated with the UDP since the time of former Mawkyrwat MLA (L) BB Nongsiej and added that he had “silently supported” the UDP in several elections.
Kharjahrin said joining the UDP was an easy decision for him since the ideology of the HYC and the UDP are similar on issues like ILP, interstate border dispute and others.
He stated that he would continue to work for the protection, preservation and promotion of the Hynniewtrep people.
“As of now I have retired as the president of a pressure group; my intention is to continue and take forward my mission through politics,” he said.
Kharjahrin also made it known that he is interested in contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Shillong constituency on a UDP ticket.
Tongkhar expressed hope that young and dynamic leaders like Kharjahrin will boost the UDP in Mawkyrwat and the state as a whole.
