MAWKYRWAT, Dec 4: The Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) South West Khasi Hills District, on Monday, said it will file a PIL if the state government fails to fulfil its promise to widen the 4-km portion of the Ranikor-Nongjri road from Borbasing Bridge, Ranikor, to Alikwareng junction into a standard two-lane road.
It may be recalled that following a complaint by the FKJGP to the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, T Lyngwa, earlier this month opposing the turning of the two-lane road into a single-lane road, the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, along with Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, Mawsynram MLA Olansing Suin and top officials of PWD (Roads) and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) had recently inspected the road.
Speaking to media persons recently, Tynsong admitted that during the inspection, it was found that there were parts of the road from Ranikor bridge to Alikwareng junction which seemed like an intermediate lane, while there were parts that felt like a single lane.
Tynsong had even said that this issue was discussed with NHIDCL officials, and stated that this portion of the road would be constructed as a two-lane road like the rest of the stretch.
Reacting to the statement of the deputy CM, president of the FKJGP South West Khasi Hills District, Kenesjune L Nonglait, on Monday, thanked the minister as well as other officials for conducting an inspection.
He, however, said that the FKJGP will closely observe the developments surrounding the road.
“If they fail to widen the road into a standard of a 2-lane road, for the interest of the general public, we will take stern action by filing a PIL in the court of law,” the FKJGP leader said.
