SHILLONG, Dec 14: A day after the repair work began at Umiam dam leading to unexpected traffic jam in the area, things have returned to normalcy on Thursday even as the repair work went on without any glitches.
Following the abrupt start of repair work on Umiam bridge on Wednesday, drivers on the road from Shillong to Guwahati and vice versa were taken by surprise. Hundreds of vehicles faced long-term delays with work being done on one side of the deteriorating bridge on Wednesday.
A visit to the dam revealed that the workers were repairing a particular area of the bridge, while movement of vehicles from both sides was being regulated by traffic personnel.
The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills on Thursday issued an order which directed that only passenger buses and light motor vehicles (LMVs) would be allowed to ply on the Umiam dam bridge.
Mechanic Motor Vehicles (MMVs) and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) from West and East Jaintia Hills district will pass from Mawryngkneng and Shillong Bypass, while MMVs and HMVs from West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills would take the Pomlakrai /Mawryngkneng/ Shillong Bypass route, the order stated.
