Shillong, Jan 2: The National People’s Party (NPP), which heads the state’s ruling coalition, is likely to officially launch the campaign of its Shillong candidate and Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh for the Lok Sabha elections only after the conclusion of Meghalaya Games.
The Meghalaya Games will be held in the Garo Hills from January 15 to 20.
NPP sources said there was a plan to launch the campaign on January 8-9.
“But now, the launch of the campaign is most likely only after the conclusion of Meghalaya Games since a majority of party leaders are not in station,” a party source said.
But Lyngdoh has started visiting villages in preparation for the polls.
“I have already arrived at the pitch. I visited a few villages in South West Khasi Hills and I will try to cover as many of them as possible,” the Minister had stated recently.
She claimed that although the Election Commission has not yet announced the poll schedule, she has time until April.
To a query, she stated that she was not sure if launching her campaign so early would be advantageous for her.
“At this time, I won’t talk much about my plans. Once we are out in the field and fully engaged in our campaign, we will make the appropriate disclosures,” she had told journalists.
She said although she was initially surprised when the party asked her to contest, she now feels both physically and psychologically ready for it. She said she would put in a lot of efforts to win the polls and become an MP.
She said this is the first time that a woman has been given the chance to win the Shillong parliamentary seat.
