TMC district general secy shot dead
KOLKATA, Jan 7: Trinamool Congress’ Murshidabad district general secretary Satyen Chowdhury was shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon.Once a close confidant of the state Congress president and veteran party Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the deceased leader later joined Trinamool Congress.He was shot dead while he was sitting with his close associates in front of an under-construction building at Bharatpur in Murshidabad on Sunday afternoon. According to eyewitnesses, suddenly three miscreants arrived at the spot on two motorcycles, shot at Chowdhury from point blank range and fled the spot.A profusely bleeding Chowdhury was rushed to the hospital where he soon died. Sources aware of the development said that infighting in the ruling party is a possible the reason.As expected, a political slugfest has surfaced over the assassination. TMC leader and chairman of Baharampur Municipality, Narugupal Mukhopadhyay said that the assassination was is the handiwork of local goons enjoying the support of both Congress and CPI-M.However, the CPI-M’s Murshidabad district secretary Zamir Mollah rubbished the allegations and said that the murder was a result of infighting in TMC. Teacher arrested for being Maoist ‘supporter’
RAIPUR, Jan 7: A 25-year-old school teacher has been arrested for allegedly being a Maoist supporter in Chhattisgarh’s Mohla-Mapnur-Ambagarh Chowki district, police said on Sunday.Angered by the arrest, a group of villagers, including school children, have launched a protest in front of a police station here, demanding his release.Ramlal Nureti was allegedly involved in putting up Maoist banners and posters in the area in September last year, he said.The accused works as a guest teacher appointed on a contractual basis at the government primary school in Karekatta village.On September 15 last year, the police recovered posters and banners from Madanwada area.Investigations revealed Nureti’s involvement in the act and police personnel kept an eye on him.The investigations and technical evidence confirmed the accused’s involvement in the offence, following which he was apprehended by the Sitagaon police.During questioning, Nureti tried to mislead the police but later admitted to putting up Maoist posters and banners, following which he was arrested. Cong suspends ex-MLA booked in rape case
JAIPUR, Jan 7: The Rajasthan Congress has suspended former MLA Mewaram Jain from the party, days after a rape case was filed against him and eight others.“Mewaram Jain, a former MLA from Barmer, has been suspended from the primary membership of the Congress with immediate effect in view of his involvement in immoral activities which is a clear indication of a breach of discipline under the constitution of the Congress party,”A woman filed a case in December 2023, accusing nine people including Jain of raping and molesting her adolescent daughter two years ago.Jain was elected from the Barmer constituency on a Congress ticket three times. He, however, lost the last election to BJP rebel Priyanka Choudhary. (PTI)
