Shillong, Jan 28: The Assam government is currently building a road along the Um-or river in Hima Nongwah-Mawtamur to connect Lokhra (in Guwahati) with Rani in Jirang. The residents of the villages under Hima Nongwah-Mawtamur are displeased with the Ri-Bhoi district administration for not acting against the blatant act of encroachment from the neighbouring state.
The locals have expressed concern over Assam’s activities on Meghalaya territory even though the border talks between the governments of Meghalaya and Assam are still ongoing in order to settle the dispute in the remaining six areas of contention.
According to reports, Assam has even encroached into a tourist area near the Um-or river from Jalut village, a Karbi village, under the jurisdiction of the Hima.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Assam has even built a check gate at a location close to a river where the locals had previously erected barbed wire fences.
However, some miscreants have since destroyed the check gates.
According to the villagers, Assam has already begun utilising JCBs to do the earthwork necessary to build a road alongside the river.
The villagers questioned why the Ri-Bhoi district administration has not acknowledged this most recent intrusion.
