Shillong, Feb 26: The Wrestling Association of Meghalaya (WAM) recently concluded selection trials for the upcoming 3rd North East Olympic Games 2024, slated to take place in Nagaland from March 18th to 23rd.
The selection camp, held at the Happy Red Rooster gym in Laitumkhrah, witnessed enthusiastic participation from aspiring wrestlers eager to represent their state on the regional stage.
WAM has announced plans to field two contingents comprising athletes proficient in two distinct disciplines – belt wrestling and freestyle wrestling.
Belt wrestling, characterized by wrestlers grappling each other’s belts and endeavoring to bring their opponents to the ground, offers a unique and thrilling spectacle. Meanwhile, freestyle wrestling, alongside Greco-Roman, stands as one of the premier styles featured in the Olympic Games.
Despite wrestling being a relatively nascent sport in Meghalaya, with WAM’s inception occurring just months prior to the second edition of the NEOG in Shillong in 2022, the enthusiasm and dedication among local athletes have been palpable.
The selection trials attracted notable participants, including medalists from the recently concluded 5th Meghalaya Games held in Tura last month. However, the association has refrained from disclosing the identities of the selected wrestlers in its recent press release.
As preparations intensify for the upcoming tournament, WAM eagerly awaits crucial details regarding logistical support for selection, coaching arrangements, and travel arrangements to Nagaland.
These vital aspects are anticipated to be finalized in coordination with the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs.
The 3rd North East Olympic Games in Nagaland promises to be a riveting affair, with a diverse array of 16 disciplines scheduled to be contested.
Notably, the event will feature the exclusion of seven disciplines previously held in Shillong, with five new disciplines introduced to enhance the sporting landscape of the region. As anticipation builds and athletes gear up to showcase their prowess, the wrestling community in Meghalaya eagerly anticipates the opportunity to shine on the regional stage and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
