SHILLONG, May 21: In compliance with a recent judicial order dated April 30, 2024, a detailed status report on the criminal cases pending against Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) was released on Monday. As of May 1, 2024, there are six unresolved cases involving these political figures.
The report is part of an ongoing scrutiny into the legal challenges facing elected officials, aiming to uphold accountability and transparency within the political sphere.
The majority of these cases, four in total, are being handled by the Court of the District and Sessions Judge in the East Khasi Hills of Shillong. The remaining two cases are distributed between the West Jaintia Hills in Jowai and West Garo Hills in Tura, with each district managing one case respectively.
Fulfilling the requirements of the judicial order, individual status reports were also submitted by the respective judges handling these cases.
These reports aim to provide clear insights into the proceedings and the current status of each case.
The learned Government Attorney (GA) has been granted permission to examine these reports to ascertain further details and ensure all legal proceedings are being followed correctly.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for this matter on June 11, 2024, where further updates and potential progress on these cases are expected to be reviewed.
