SHILLONG, May 27: An awareness programme was on Saturday organised by Shubham Charitable Association in collaboration with Operation Clean-Up at Sohryngkham, Lulong, in East Khasi Hills to promote the importance of menstrual hygiene.
A statement in this regard informed that the awareness programme laid focus on ‘Zero-Waste Period Project’.
Aimed at making progress towards community health and environmental sustainability, the programme saw discussions on the use and importance of ‘Fresh Pads’ made from cloth fabrics by Shubham Charitable Association.
Mawryngkneng MLA HS Kharpran, who attended the programme as the chief guest, informed the gathering about the growing environmental threat posed by menstrual waste.
He, in his address, also inspired everyone to use ‘Fresh Pads’ and emphasised menstrual hygiene management and its impact on women’s health and empowerment.
The Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim, who was the guest of honour, disseminated awareness among the women about the quality of ‘Fresh Pads’ and told them how these pads were beneficial for employment and the environment.
It may be mentioned that Mukhim, who is known for her contribution in environmental issues, was behind the concept of ‘Zero-Waste Period’ and the creation of ‘Fresh Pads’.
Meanwhile, the Association convener Payal Bajaj provided information to the rural women about the usefulness of ‘Fresh Pads’, while its president Pushpa Bajaj thanked Kharpran, Mukhim, village head, staff of Health Department, among others, for their contribution.
