New Delhi, July 26: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Friday advised the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee office-bearers and other leaders to work vigorously in order to retain the Gambegre seat in the upcoming Assembly bye-election which will be a huge boost to cadres and workers in the hill state.
She advised the state leaders to keep the momentum of victory of the Congress party in the Tura Lok Sabha polls and also be prepared for the district councils and the assembly polls four years later.
Her advice came during her meeting with MPCC leaders, led by president Vincent H Pala, at her residence.
This was the first meeting of the MPCC with Gandhi after the Lok Sabha polls in which the party wrested the Tura seat from the ruling NPP but lost the Shillong seat to the VPP. Gandhi also enquired about the post-poll scenario in the hill state which was ruled by the Congress for most of its half-century-old history.
Some Congress leaders, including former ministers, who had deserted the party and mostly joined the NPP are now looking back to return following the party’s win in the Tura seat, party sources said.
The MPCC leaders, including Tura Lok Sabha member Saleng Sangma, working president Deborah Marak, general secretary Wansuk Syiem, and AICC leader Szarita Laitphlang, had a meeting with AICC general secretary, KC Venugopal on Wednesday.
