SHILLONG, July 31: The Akashvani Shillong participated in the recent ‘Gift A Radio Campaign’, which was organised by the Office of the ADG (P), Guwahati, to commemorate the opening of the first radio station in the Northeastern region on July 1, 1948. As part of the celebration, the officers and staff of Akashvani Shillong gifted new radio sets to several radio-listening enthusiasts as well as to a few organisations.
Casual assignees of the station also participated by sending video and audio clips of personalities who are ardent listeners and who voiced their idea of gifting a radio to their family and friends as a very thoughtful and meaningful gift.
Prof. Streamlet Dkhar of Khasi department, NEHU, who is an ardent radio listener, said she used to love listening to radio programmes, especially those that helped to enrich the Khasi language.
She mentioned that there are funny moments while listening to the questions posed by the radio jockeys and that she personally enjoys programmes relating to farming and reviving Khasi folklore. According to her, many people still love to listen to the radio.
Another dedicated radio listener from West Khasi Hills, Andreas Iawphniaw, said that he has been listening to the radio since 1980 and has received lots of valuable information, whether it is on health or farming.
He noted that the programmes aired on the radio have helped his children in their education.
