SHILLONG, Aug 6: The United Democratic Party (UDP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) delved into a party report on its poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha election from Shillong.
Speaking to reporters after the CEC meeting, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said social media has played a critical role in disseminating information during the recent Lok Sabha polls.
According to him, they had gone to the people to understand the voting pattern. Lyngdoh said the party supporters in some of the constituencies told him that they had supported the candidate of other party in the Lok Sabha polls.
“But at the same time our supporters assured that they are going to back the party in the MDC and Assembly elections,” Lyngdoh said.
The UDP chief was told that Metbah not contesting the polls was the reason behind the voters in Mairang, his constituency, not rallying for the UDP in polls.
“These are a few of my findings. What I could see is that the trend of the Lok Sabha polls is not going to repeat in the MDC elections,” he said.
The UDP president said that they also discussed on the district council elections even though they are not sure when it is going to be held.
Lyngdoh revealed that the UDP has decided to prepare the groundwork in different constituencies and at the district-level to identify the potential candidates who will contest from UDP. “We have also decided that tickets will be given to all the sitting MDCs,” he informed.
With regard to Gambegre bypoll, the UDP president said that the party’s leadership from Garo Hills will take the decisions in this matter. The UDP wants to take time before arriving at any decision on whether the party should contest the by-election or not.
At the July 5 meeting, UDP leaders observed a two-minute silence in memory of party’s senior MDC from Shella, Teinwell Dkhar, who had passed away recently.
