SHILLONG, Aug 18: In what promises development for the region, bolstering Meghalaya’s position as an emerging hub for IT and innovation in the Northeast, the second phase of the Shillong IT Park, which began construction in January 2023, is on track to be completed six months ahead of schedule. Originally slated for completion in January 2026, the contractor, Badri Rai and Company, has assured the government that the building will be ready for inauguration by August 2025.
The project, which is being developed at a cost of Rs 114 crore, is nearing 80 per cent completion. The new G+4 structure spans an area of 1.5 lakh square feet, with the laying of the second-to-last slab currently in progress.
Government sources have confirmed that the structural work is expected to be finished within the next month, well ahead of its deadline. It may be noted that this project is fully funded by the state government.
The rapid progress comes on the heels of the successful Phase I of the IT Park, which has already attracted several IT companies. With the momentum of Phase I, many IT firms are now approaching the government to secure space in the upcoming facility. The new building will feature five lifts and a range of modern amenities designed to support both long-term and short-term operations.
The Phase II expansion is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to local employment. Similar to the first phase, the new facility will adopt a “plug and play” model, allowing companies to lease space for temporary projects as well as permanent operations.
