SHILLONG, Sep 6: The High Court of Meghalaya has sought additional inputs from the Meghalaya government regarding the status and timelines for the implementation of CCTV cameras and Automatic Speed Detection Devices in the state capital.
The matter was raised during a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning road safety and traffic management here.
N. Syngkon, counsel for the PIL petitioner, drew the High Court’s attention to an affidavit filed by the State respondents on August 14, 2024, and pointed out that, according to paragraphs 4, 5, and 6 of the affidavit, little progress has been made regarding the activation of these crucial safety devices.
During the hearing, the Additional Advocate General (AAG) informed the Court that corrective measures regarding iron plates on the roads were under way.
Acknowledging that the PIL was filed to address the failure of state authorities and law enforcement to enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and establish a traffic safety system to curb reckless driving, the High Court determined that further clarification and updates were needed from both the petitioner and State respondents on the progress of the safety measures, including the CCTV cameras and speed detection devices mentioned in the affidavit.
The petitioner has also been granted permission to submit an additional affidavit highlighting locations where traffic hazards persist.
