Car veers off road in Ri-Bhoi; driver killed

NONGPOH, Sep 8: A tragic accident occurred on Sunday afternoon at approximately 1.30 pm when a car (ML05J8818), driven by one Michael Jones Nohriang (30) from Pyndensohsaw, Mawsynram, East Khasi Hills, veered off the road while traveling from Shillong towards Bhoirymbong.
Upon reaching Umeit village on the Shillong Bypass (NH-44), the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve to the right and plummet 73 feet off the road, landing in a vegetable plantation.
The vehicle overturned in the process, trapping the driver inside.
Unfortunately, Nohriang succumbed to his injuries on the spot, with his legs pinned inside the wrecked vehicle.
Local residents, along with the police, worked together to extricate his body from the car. After completing the necessary formalities at the scene, and upon identification by the victim’s family, police conducted an inquest. The body was then transferred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The severely damaged vehicle was towed by the police and is currently held at the Khapmara PIC for further investigation.
