Fromer MLA files plaint over RTI non-compliance
TURA, Sep 9: Former South Tura MLA John Leslee K Sangma has lodged a complaint with the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), citing failure by two departments in West Garo Hills to provide information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. Despite a directive from the First Appellate Authority in one case, the information remains withheld. Sangma initially sought information on November 13, 2023, from the Public Information Officer (PIO), Superintendent of Police, regarding the depositing of licensed arms during elections. According to the former MLA, the reply was kept pending by the department and it was only on May 21, 2024, that a copy was provided to him after he personally approached the official concerned. However, the problem did not end there as, according to Sangma, he was provided false information by the PIO. Further appeals for information went unanswered. In another case, Sangma filed another RTI application in May 2024, seeking details on the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in West Garo Hills. Two months later, he has yet to receive a response. “Of late, RTI applicants have been facing a big problem in Garo Hills in getting information due to the lack of understanding of the law by the PIO or due to lack of cooperation being extended by a concerned PIO. I sincerely hope that the Chief Information Commissioner takes cognisance takes prompt action in this matter and sends a strong message to the erring officers so that the rights given to the citizens are upheld. It will be a great failure and shame on the part of the government if, despite the provisions given under the Right to Information Act, 2005, citizens have to go to the Court to avail their right to information,” Sangma said. Meanwhile, a separate case of non-compliance to an RTI application was also raised by a local leader from South Garo Hills, Greneth M Sangma, who had earlier sought information on central and state scheme projects implemented by the MBDA, Baghmara, in the last three years. However, Greneth alleged that he was being denied information by the PIO concerned.Meanwhile, an appeal has been made by Greneth to the CIC to direct the PIO to provide the information under the RTI Act 2005.
