Chennai, Sep 22: The Indian men’s cricket team has achieved a landmark moment in Test cricket, following their emphatic 280-run win over Bangladesh in Chennai on Sunday. This victory marks a significant turning point in India’s 92-year Test history, as the team now boasts more wins than losses, with 179 victories against 178 defeats.
This achievement places India among an elite group of Test-playing nations that have managed to hold a winning record at some point in their history. In the 147-year history of Test cricket, only seven teams have ever recorded more wins than losses, and currently, only five—including India—hold this distinction.
As of now, India’s overall Test record stands as follows: 580 matches, 179 wins, 178 losses, 222 draws, and 1 tie. Joining the ranks of nations with a winning record, India stands alongside Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan. Australia leads the pack with 414 wins and 232 losses, followed by England with 397 wins to 325 losses. South Africa has 179 wins and 161 losses, while Pakistan maintains a record of 148 wins and 144 losses.
Despite this momentous achievement, India has taken the longest route to reach this milestone. With 580 matches played, India becomes the slowest among teams that have achieved more wins than losses. In contrast, Australia set the benchmark early, achieving the feat after winning the inaugural Test match against England in 1877.Interestingly, Afghanistan and West Indies have also, at one point, held a winning Test record. However, five Test-playing nations—New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and Ireland—are still in pursuit of reaching a similar milestone. Their journey in Test cricket continues as they strive to join the ranks of nations with more wins than losses. India’s historic accomplishment not only solidifies their place among cricket’s greats but also sets the stage for future successes as they continue their ascent in the world of Test cricket.
