Brichyrnot, Oct 2: The Dorbar Shnong of Brichyrnot village in East Jaintia Hills has formally requested the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Jaintia Hills district to take immediate action on repairing the deteriorating approach road that connects the village to National Highway-6.
The highway which is critical for the daily commute of the residents has fallen into disrepair, creating significant challenges for the local community.
Rangbah Shnong of Brichyrnot village, Stanly Massar, informed media persons about the situation, explaining that the 4-km road has been neglected for too long.
Massar highlighted that although Star Cement constructed a 1.4-km stretch of reinforced concrete (RCC) road within the village in 2021, the remaining 2.4 km, leading up to the national highway, is in extremely poor condition.
“The RCC road inside the village is still in good condition but the rest of the road is completely dilapidated,” Massar said.
In 2022, the approach road was reportedly reconstructed by the District Mineral Funds (DMF) of East Khasi Hills at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
However, the project quickly proved inadequate as the road’s black topping was washed away within weeks of completion. Massar attributed the rapid deterioration to the constant movement of heavy vehicles through the area.
“The black topping didn’t last, and this is due to the unregulated passage of heavy vehicles, which the road was clearly not designed to handle,” the Headman stated.
The Dorbar Shnong, through a formal letter to the Deputy Commissioner, stressed on the urgency of the situation, pointing out that the road is a vital lifeline for the people of Brichyrnot village. Without it, the village remains largely disconnected from the National Highway 06 and the outside world.
