TURA, Oct 3: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the 33/11KV, 2X2.5 MVA Rerapara Substation in South West Garo Hills, while promising a significant improvement in power supply for the region.
Built under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Project, the substation will reduce power cuts and enable the use of modern electrical appliances for residents in the area.
Constructed by ACDC and Saideep Buildon Pvt. Ltd., the new substation is set to improve power reliability, reduce voltage issues, and foster economic growth.
In his address during the inaugural programme, Conrad expressed his gratitude to the Centre for its support in developing the crucial infrastructure.
He further highlighted that 24 similar substations are planned under the ADB’s funding across Meghalaya to meet growing power demands, with additional substations to be sanctioned if necessary.
In addition to the substation, Conrad announced an allocation of Rs 8 crore for road construction in the region, underlining the government’s commitment to regional development.
He then called for collective efforts to advance development in underserved areas like Rangsakona and Gambegre.
It may be mentioned the Rerapara Substation is equipped with two 2.5MVA transformers, a control room, and staff quarters.
The project aims to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and enhance power distribution across the region. This new infrastructure is expected to benefit villages in Damalgre and surrounding areas, offering stable power and encouraging industrial development.
Prior to this, power was supplied from a substation in Gongglangre, resulting in frequent interruptions and low voltage due to a long 11KV line. The new substation will shorten the previous 113KM of the line by dividing it into four outgoing feeders, drastically improving the power supply.
Constructed at Rs 6.29 crore, the project marks a milestone for the region.
Meanwhile, Rangsakona MLA Subir Marak expressed his gratitude to the state government, noting that the substation will resolve long-standing power issues and improve the lives of residents after 52 years of statehood.
Others who were part of the programme include Power Minister AT Mondal, government officials and residents of Rerapara, Damalgre and Mellim areas.
