SHILLONG, Oct 16: The Department of Anatomy at NEIGRIHMS marked World Anatomy Day on Tuesday, with a series of creative and educational events to honor Andreas Vesalius, the father of modern anatomy. The celebration featured enthusiastic participation from both faculty and students of the MBBS and Nursing Colleges, blending art with medical science under the theme ‘Anatomy in Motion – Art & Anatomy.’
One of the highlights of the day was a body painting competition, where students showcased their artistic talents by depicting human organs and structures on live canvases. A poster competition on the topic ‘Anatomy in Clinical Practice’ allowed participants to creatively express the role of anatomy in modern medicine, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject.
Prof (Dr) Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, served as the chief guest, while Prof Dr C Daniela, the Medical Superintendent, graced the event as guest of honour. The programme began with a welcome address by Prof Dr Amitav Sarma, Head of the Department of Anatomy, who emphasised the importance of World Anatomy Day and its relevance to both medical education and clinical practice.
In his address, Prof Mehta highlighted the value of learning anatomy through innovative methods, such as body painting and poster creation, alongside traditional textbook study and specimen analysis. Guest of honour Dr C Daniela also underscored the critical role anatomy plays in clinical practice, reinforcing the need for a strong anatomical foundation for future healthcare professionals.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony for the competition winners, followed by a vote of thanks from Dr Mary Hydrina D’silva, Organising Secretary and Associate Professor in Anatomy, who expressed her gratitude to all participants, dignitaries, and faculty for their contributions in making the event a success.
