Shillong student nominated for mountaineering course at HMI

Shillong, Oct 21: The Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) has announced that Balawanhabor Rynjah, a student of Sankardev College, has been selected to attend the prestigious Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling.
The course, scheduled from October 21 to November 17, is sponsored by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.The Basic Mountaineering Course is an essential foundation program that introduces participants to the fundamental skills required for mountaineering.
The course covers various aspects, including movement on rock, snow, and ice, alongside theoretical and practical lessons on map reading, navigation, weather patterns, and mountain hygiene.
Participants are also trained in basic medical practices and how to maintain personal health and safety in challenging mountain environments.
The BMC aims not only to equip trainees with essential mountaineering techniques but also to instill the right attitude, treating mountaineering as an art rather than merely an adventurous physical activity.
The course emphasizes environmental conservation in the Himalayas and encourages resilience by helping participants adapt to the hardships of cold, hunger, and fatigue.
Balawanhabor Rynjah’s selection is a significant achievement, highlighting his potential in the field of mountaineering.
