SHILLONG, Nov 3: The NPP is confident of a win in the Gambegre bypoll since it believes that “the party in power usually wins the bypoll”.
“The trend shows that we are winning in Gambegre. There is a difference between general elections and by-elections. In general elections everybody is in doubt about who will form the next government whereas during by-elections a party is already in power and people vote on that basis since they need development,” Cabinet minister and senior NPP leader AT Mondal said on Sunday.
He made it clear that the ruling party’s win in a bypoll is not a thumb rule. “We will have to work hard and convince the people that we can provide better service. Our candidate (Mehtab Chandee A Sangma) is very active and she knows the ground situation”.
Asked if TMC will be the biggest challenge for the NPP, he said, “That needs to be assessed. We are only concerned about our candidate and her win.”
Mehtab is pitted against TMC’s Sadhiarani Sangma, Congress’ Jingjang Marak and BJP’s Bernard Marak.
