ISRO scientist enlightens USTM students on space agency’s feats, contributions

SHILLONG, Nov 5: Dr T.K. Sundara Murthy, a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on Tuesday visited the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) to enlighten the students about the contributions of India’s space agency to space physics and inspire the next generation of researchers.
Dr Murthy, a prominent figure in India’s space research community, was accompanied by S Bharathi Murthy and Pranesh Debnath, a Vyomika Space (ISRO Space) tutor.
Addressing a workshop titled ‘Recent Achievements of ISRO in Space Physics’, organised by the USTM’s Physics Department, Dr Murthy provided an engaging overview of ISRO’s historical milestones and recent missions, highlighting notable successes such as Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan.
He elaborated on technological advancements and their implications for space physics research, showcasing ISRO’s dedication to advancing knowledge and its applications in everyday life.
He also discussed the practical uses of space physics, including how satellite data aids in climate monitoring, disaster management and urban planning.
On the occasion, he also shared exciting prospects for upcoming missions.
Further, during an interactive session, Dr Murthy addressed student queries, encouraging them to explore potential research topics and opportunities in the field.
The audience of undergraduate and postgraduate students actively engaged with him during the Q&A session, asking insightful questions on career paths in space research and the importance of international collaboration in advancing space science.
It is pertinent to note that Dr Murthy has dedicated over 40 years to ISRO’s development.
As Mission Director, he was instrumental in the design and successful commissioning of communication satellites such as EUTELSAT, HYLAS and AVANTHI.
