BHOIRYMBONG, Nov 15: Shillong has seen its fair share of legendary performances, but the Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 will forever be etched in its musical memory as the stage where Akon made his Indian concert debut and what a debut it was!
The global sensation, known for his chart-topping hits and magnetic stage presence, set the Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association ground (Madan Kurkalang) ablaze with an electrifying performance that left fans wanting for more.
Dressed in a white jacket and sporting a bold, oversized black necklace, an accessory that could only be described as a statement piece, Akon strutted onto the stage like the superstar he is.
If there’s one thing Akon knows, it’s how to connect with his fans. And connect he did, quite literally. In what can only be described as a jaw-dropping moment of raw energy, the superstar leapt off the stage and into the crowd, immersing himself in the sea of fans. Chaos ensued as hands reached out to touch him, and Akon, ever the entertainer, leaned into the frenzy.
Ahead of Akon’s debut performance in India, The Shillong Times caught up with the Lonely singer for an exclusive conversation. Excerpts:
When Akon lent his voice to Chammak Challo, he thought Hindi has a rhythmic flow. “It was a pretty interesting experience, I must say,” he said.
For an artist whose music transcends borders, stepping into the world of Bollywood was both a challenge and a triumph. “Singing Chammak Challo was an incredible experience,” Akon recalled. “Hindi has such a rhythmic flow, and I wanted to get it right. The love I received for that song showed me how music can bridge language and culture. It’s a moment I’ll always cherish.”
Now, years later, Akon is back on Indian soil, but this time, the stage is his, and the setting couldn’t be more picturesque. As he geared up for his debut performance at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong, Akon’s excitement was palpable. “I’ve heard so much about Shillong, its beauty, its culture, and its music. Performing amidst nature, with such passionate audiences, is something I’m truly looking forward to,” he shared.
Shillong, often hailed as India’s Rock Capital, has long been a cradle of musical talent.
Akon, aware of it, mentioned, “From what I’ve seen and heard, Shillong has absolutely earned that title. The passion for music here is undeniable. Performing in a place with such a strong music culture inspires me to bring my best.”
“I’ve been told about the immense talent here,” Akon admits. “I think collaborating with local artists could lead to something really special. However, I will take my time and not jump into anything immediately,” he said.
For the Cherry Blossom Festival, Akon promised a set list that pays homage to his classics while also offering surprises. “There will be no dull moment,” he said.
Akon’s ability to stay relevant over decades has been nothing short of remarkable. From being a favourite of 90s kids to captivating today’s generation, his music remains timeless.
“It’s all about evolving while staying true to who you are,” Akon signed off.
