NONGPOH, Nov 15: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Friday opposed the state government’s alleged covert plans to transform the Conservation Training Institute (CTI) in Byrnihat transform the institute into an industrial area and relocate its operations to Mawkhanu.
The opposition came after the VPP, under the leadership of its president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, conducted a surprise inspection of the institute during the day.
The inspection team included prominent VPP leaders, viz. Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang and Mawryngkneng MLA Heaving Stone Kharpran, who joined Basaiawmoit in thoroughly assessing the facilities and surrounding areas of the institute, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Soil and Water Conservation Department of the Meghalaya government.
Addressing media persons after the inspection, Basaiawmoit expressed the party’s strong opposition to any such transformation.
“The VPP will not allow this transformation to happen, come what may,” he asserted, warning the government of forceful resistance if the plan proceeds.
Basaiawmoit revealed that the VPP has already submitted a formal request to the government for clarification on the matter but has yet to receive a response.
The VPP president also said that despite raising the issue in the state assembly, no official reply was provided.
