Shillong, Nov 21: Shillong Lajong FC is gearing up for their I-League 2024-25 season opener against Goa’s Churchill Brothers this Sunday at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Shillong. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
The change in venue from the earlier All India Football Federation announcement promises a better fan experience, with closer views of the action from the stands.
Under new head coach Jose Carlos Rodriguez Hevia, Lajong is determined to aim for the top spot this season. The Spaniard, who returned to the club earlier this year, impressed during the Durand Cup, where Lajong reached the semifinals before bowing out to NorthEast United FC, the eventual champions.
Speaking at a press conference, Rodriguez outlined his bold aspirations for the team. “We are going into every match with the aim of winning. Is it possible? Hopefully, yes. It will be hard, very hard, but the players are hungry and ambitious,” he said.
Declaring his target to secure the top position in the league, he added, “We are not mediocre. We are ambitious, and with the talent, sacrifice, and passion here, we will strive for the best every day.”
Rodriguez expressed confidence in his squad, particularly the local players, whom he described as “surprisingly talented.”
The team has prepared rigorously with 12 friendly matches over the past two months to ensure they are match-ready. “While the opponents weren’t always strong, the games helped us improve daily and refine our preparations,” he explained.
Club officials Seibor Sana and Haba Lyngdoh joined the players and coach at the press conference to announce the sale of tickets for the opening game.
Fans can purchase tickets starting November 22 at various outlets, including The Electronic Centre in Police Bazaar, Café Shillong in Laitumkhrah, and the SSA Stadium Ticket Counter. Ticket prices range from Rs 150 to Rs 500, depending on the stand.
