Meghalaya House panel on women empowerment for stringent laws to curb crimes

Shillong, Dec 16: The Committee on Empowerment of Women, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has called for stringent laws to reduce cases of crime against women and children in the state.

The Committee on Empowerment of Women, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly headed by its chairman Santa Mary Shylla on Monday held a joint meeting with its counterpart from the Kerala Legislative Assembly

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Santa Mary Shylla said that stringent laws are required to deal with increasing cases of crime against women and children in the state saying the law should deter people from committing any crime against women and children,

Informing that the Committee is following up many cases against women and children through DCs and SPs, she said that the Committee has also requested the judges to dispose of all the crime cases against women and children quickly.

As far as the recent brutal case in Jaintia Hills where a woman was burnt by her husband, she informed that the Committee would visit her on Tuesday to get an update on her health and also to give her some assistance.

Asked what has led to crime against women and children in matrilineal Meghalaya, she said that economical issues, drugs and lack of jobs seems to be the factors which are contributing to the crimes against women and children.
