Inter-school Chess tourney concludes in SWGH

TURA, Dec 16: The South West Garo Hills Open Inter School District Chess Championship 2024, a celebration of young minds and strategic brilliance, concluded recently at St. Mary’s School, Ghatgre, Mukdangra under Rerapara C&RD Block.
Organized by the South West Garo Hills District Chess Association (SWGHDCA) and sponsored by the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment, Meghalaya (SCSTE), the event was held under the theme “Queen’s Gambit” as part of the Chess in School Program.
Over several intense rounds of chess, young prodigies from schools across South West Garo Hills displayed remarkable talent and strategic prowess.
In an Open Category, Chongkimbea M Sangma of St. Claret School, Ampati and Bidasagar D Sangma of Bandalkona Secondary School were crowned champions with 6.5 points
In the Under-9 Category, Sengdo M Sangma St. Claret School, Ampati and Breanlerry R Sangma of Nirupama Memorial Secondary School, Garobadha were champions with 5 points.
In the Under-12 Category, Arish R Marak of Nirupama Memorial Secondary School, Garobadha, Flora R Marak of St. Dominic Savio School, Garobadha, and Dianchi Ch. Marak of Sun Town English School were champions with 5 points.
Instilling discipline and sharpening the young minds, this year’s championship witnessed the participation of students from more schools across the district, all demonstrating not only exceptional skills but also the spirit of sportsmanship.
The championship kicked off with an inspiring Opening Ceremony, where Henrych D Sangma, Secretary of SWGHDCA, presided as the chairperson. Sister Sonitha R Marak, Principal of St. Mary’s School, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, inaugurating the tournament with the ceremonial first move of the opening match.
The tournament concluded with a grand Closing Ceremony, attended by Dr. Sengkham Marak as the Chief Guest, who commended the participants for their exceptional skills and perseverance.
