Kolkata, Dec 17: East Bengal FC delighted their home supporters at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday with a dramatic comeback victory in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season.
After trailing by two goals in the first half, the Red and Gold Brigade roared back to score four goals in the second half, defeating Punjab FC 4-2 for their first-ever win against them.
Jordanian centre-back Hijazi Maher opened the scoring for East Bengal in the 47th minute, followed by substitute midfielder Vishnu Puthia in the 56th. A 60th-minute own goal by Punjab’s centre-back Suresh Meetei put East Bengal ahead, and striker David Lalhlansanga sealed the win with a goal in the 67th minute. David, who played a pivotal role in the team’s attacking efforts, was deservedly named Player of the Match.
This victory is sure to please Spanish head coach Oscar Bruzon, though East Bengal FC remain in 11th place with 10 points from three wins, one draw, and seven losses. Punjab FC, led by Greek coach Panagiotis Dilberis, will rue their inability to hold onto a two-goal lead. They remain fifth on the table with 18 points from 10 matches, comprising six wins and five losses.
Punjab FC took the lead in the 21st minute when Bosnian midfielder Asmir Suljic connected beautifully with an attacking through-ball from Argentine winger Pulga Vidal, sliding the ball past East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill. Punjab doubled their lead in the 39th minute, with Pulga Vidal showcasing brilliant footwork. (Agencies)
