MAWKYRWAT, Dec 30: Hundreds of leaders and supporters from various parties including the Congress, HSPDP, TMC as well as the NPP joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) during a general meeting of the party’s Mawkyrwat Circle here on Monday.
Working president of the UDP Central Body and former KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM), Titos Chyne, welcomed the new members including leaders and supporters from the different political parties. During the meeting, Chyne introduced Jeslanroy Nongsiej as the party’s candidate for the MDC election from Mawkyrwat constituency in the presence of Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar and other UDP leaders from Mawkyrwat.
Speaking on the occasion, Chyne urged the new members to collaborate with the primary units at the village level to strengthen the party and ensure victory in the upcoming MDC election.
Addressing Nongsiej, Chyne advised him to remain a principled public representative if elected, cautioning against switching parties, which he described as a betrayal of supporters and the MLA who endorsed him.
“I am pleased to inform everyone that, during this term, none of the UDP MDCs have defected to other parties. Previously, it was common for MDCs to change loyalties frequently. Therefore, you must respect the trust of those who support you,” Chyne stated.
Amid rumors of a split within the UDP Mawkyrwat Circle, fuelled by claims that individuals denied tickets were joining other political parties, two leaders — Edilbert Iawphniaw and Synshar Lyngkhoi — publicly reaffirmed their allegiance to the UDP. Both leaders, who were not selected as candidates for the MDC election, declared their commitment to working for the victory of Jeslanroy Nongsiej.
