NPP’s Pyniaid confident about constituency shift

SHILLONG, Jan 7: After deciding to shift his constituency from Sohryngkham to Nongthymmai in the upcoming MDC polls, NPP leader and Chief Executive Member of KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, has expressed confidence in his abilities to usher in good governance to Nongthymmai constituency.
Stating that his decision to shift constituencies does not diminish his commitment to serving the people, Syiem said, “My priority has always been to serve to the best of my ability. I am committed to making Nongthymmai a model constituency by ensuring access to basic amenities, including drinking water, healthcare facilities, and good road connectivity.”
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he expressed satisfaction with his achievements over the past five years, while highlighting his contributions to enacting new legislations as a Council member.
“What’s the point of making noise in the streets? As a legislator, your job is to focus on creating laws for the benefit of the people. Now, it’s up to the people to judge whether I have delivered as an MDC,” he said.
On the other hand, the KHADC CEM urged voters to prioritise electing capable candidates over voting based solely on party affiliation in the upcoming district council elections.  “The party is just a uniform we wear during elections. In the end, people need a leader who can deliver overall development for the constituency,” Syiem said.
He explained that contesting under a political party is primarily to secure an election symbol.
“What is the point of electing a political party if the candidates it fields are not competent? People do not need leaders who only know how to speak and shout,” he added.
Syiem refrained from commenting on the decision of Mawlai’s sitting MDC, Teibor Pathaw, to leave the NPP and contest as an independent.
“It’s his personal decision. Perhaps he wants to return to his independent roots since he won the last election as an independent candidate,” Syiem said.
