SHILLONG, Jan 15: The Meghalaya government is determined to take up major infrastructure projects across the state this year, signalling a transformative phase for development and connectivity.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the government is committed to upgrading the Shillong Airport to accommodate more commercial flights. A meeting has been scheduled with the Central government in New Delhi to expedite the process.
“Once bigger commercial flights start landing here, it will be a game-changer for the state,” said Sangma, highlighting that Indigo and SpiceJet are keen on landing their Airbus A320s following the expansion of the runway.
The Chief Minister is also working toward introducing a direct flight between Shillong and Tura under the UDAN scheme to improve regional connectivity.
On the long-pending Shillong Ropeway project, he said the work has been awarded, but the Forest Department’s clearance to cut branches beneath the ropeway line remains a minor issue. The implementing agency has requested full clearing of the forest line for smoother execution.
The proposed skywalk from Barik to Police Bazar has been temporarily put on hold due to anticipated traffic disruptions during construction. Work on this project will commence after addressing traffic concerns.
Sangma laid thrust on starting the elevated road projects from Rilbong to Barik and Secretariat via Anjalee Point and Civil Hospital. The NHIDCL has been directed to complete the feasibility report. The CM said he will raise the matter with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.
“These projects will not only enhance Shillong’s aesthetics but also significantly decongest the city,” he said.
The government is pushing for the construction of the High-Speed Corridor from Umiam to Ratacherra, with a proposed budget of Rs 24,000 crore. The Wahumkhrah River Beautification project is also set to commence, with construction work already awarded.
Sangma announced plans to inaugurate the Shillong Medical College and Hospital by September 2025. He acknowledged challenges in recruiting manpower for the Tura Medical College but said the project is progressing well.
The government also plans to build a state-of-the-art swimming pool and a football stadium with a seating capacity of over 40,000 in Mawkhanu.
New Secretariat in New Shillong
The foundation stone for the new Secretariat building in New Shillong will be laid on January 21. Sangma aims to complete a few blocks within two years, allowing some departments to begin relocating.
State Anthem to include Pnar verses
The Chief Minister announced that the Cabinet has decided to amend the State Anthem. The amendment, inspired by suggestions from the Jaintia Hills, will include a few lines in Pnar, enriching the Anthem’s inclusivity and cultural representation.
The improved state anthem will be officially unveiled during the Meghalaya Games to be held in Jowai later this year.
New Art and Heritage Award Approved
The Cabinet has approved guidelines to establish the Meghalaya Art and Heritage Award. The award will honour contributions in performing arts, folk music, dance, drama, theatre, craftsmanship, and other cultural pursuits.
A committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary and comprising members from the Arts & Culture Department, will oversee the selection of awardees.
Amended School Service Rules for Better Promotions
The Cabinet also approved the Meghalaya School Service Rules 2025, a move that will provide better promotional opportunities for teachers in Government Lower Primary (LP) Schools.
The previous service rules limited promotions for LP School teachers and Assistant Teachers, leading to stagnation in their roles. The amended rules aim to address these issues and enhance career prospects for educators.
State Rules for Forensic Analysis Fees
To streamline the examination of cases handled by the Directorate of Forensic Sciences under the Home (Police) Department, the Cabinet approved new rules to regulate the payment of analysis fees.
