SHILLONG, Jan 16: The Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) showcased the state’s rich tourism potential by participating in The Gypsy Travel Festival (TGTF) held at Jio World Drive, Mumbai, on January 11 and 12.
MTDC was the only state representative from India at this global platform promoting experiential travel. The festival brought together participants from across the globe and different parts of India, offering an unparalleled opportunity to highlight Meghalaya’s breathtaking attractions, unique products, and vibrant cultural heritage.
MTDC Director Alan West Kharkongor stressed on the importance of participating in a metropolitan market like Mumbai, which offers immense potential for Meghalaya’s diverse tourism offerings. He noted that despite its richness in culture and natural beauty, Meghalaya remains relatively unexplored in this market.
“Participating in TGTF allowed us to tap into this untapped audience, sparking interest in Meghalaya’s offerings and fostering meaningful engagement with potential travellers,” said Kharkongor, adding that the participation underscores the state’s commitment to elevating its tourism industry to international standards.
The MTDC delegation included dedicated staff and prominent local tour operators, who played a crucial role in promoting niche tourism and experiential travel. These representatives included Gerald Samuel Duia of Duia Trailblazers, John M Wankhar of Walk With Nine Lives, Vanessa A Sangma of Merak Tours, as well as Dareen Sawkmie and Rapkika Kharmawlong from MTDC.
These entrepreneurs showcased curated travel experiences such as community-based tourism, culinary tours, agri-tourism, Eri Silk trails, and eco-adventures, resonating deeply with modern travellers. Their participation not only enhanced Meghalaya’s visibility but also fostered valuable connections with stakeholders, journalists, travel writers, and industry professionals eager to explore the state.
Duia, a renowned tourism expert, described the festival as a groundbreaking event that positioned Meghalaya as a hub for niche and responsible tourism. Attendees were captivated by the state’s unique attractions, including Living Root Bridges, caves, pristine waters, canyons, and its rich cultural heritage. The festival also featured insightful talks by global tourism experts, attracting travel writers, influencers, and filmmakers committed to promoting sustainable tourism in Meghalaya.
Similarly, Wankhar, an experienced tour operator, praised TGTF as one of the best travel fairs he had attended. He lauded its vibrant atmosphere and excellent organisation, noting the festival’s ability to generate immediate Business-to-Consumer (B2C) opportunities. He highlighted the value of Meghalaya being the only Indian state represented alongside other countries, significantly boosting its visibility as a premier travel destination.
The festival concluded with a captivating traditional performance by Meghalaya’s own band, Summer Salt, whose soulful music beautifully encapsulated the state’s cultural essence. Their electrifying performance left the audience mesmerized, igniting a longing to visit the enchanting hills of the Northeast.
