Drugs worth over Rs 53 cr consigned to flames in JH

JOWAI, Jan 23: Drugs worth over Rs 53 crore were destroyed by the state government at the Star Cement Limited, Lumshnong, on Thursday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang and representatives from the civil society were present.
Sangma emphasised the state government’s commitment to the war on drugs.
“Today’s disposal of drugs underscores our unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking in Meghalaya. This is a strong message to the community that we are serious about this fight and we will continue to take decisive actions,” he said.
Thanking Star Cement Limited for facilitating the incineration process by providing its high-temperature facilities, Sangma said, “We appreciate the cooperation of Star Cement Limited in ensuring the safe and effective disposal of these substances.”
Tynsong congratulated the police and the departments involved.
“The police, under the leadership of the DGP, have done a commendable job. This programme is an example of the collective efforts by all stakeholders to eliminate drug abuse in the state,” Tynsong said.
The DGP assured the public of complete transparency in the drug disposal process. “Every step has been taken following the law, and the entire process is being documented to maintain accountability,” she said.
The event also highlighted the state government’s holistic approach in addressing the drug menace, including rehabilitation initiatives and community involvement. The Health Minister and the Social Welfare Department were acknowledged for their roles in spearheading these efforts.
The government’s war on drugs also includes the establishment of dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force teams and specialised police stations across the state.
