SHILLONG, Jan 24: The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of two new degree colleges in East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills.
Announcing this on Friday, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma stated that the department has already issued an advertisement for the recruitment of faculty members.
He also noted that the Patharkhmah and Rongjeng degree colleges have been completed, with academic sessions set to commence this year. Further, the Mawphlang Commerce and Science College will begin operations from the current academic session.
Addressing the challenges faced by the education department over the years, Sangma highlighted that Meghalaya has the highest number of schools and teachers in proportion to its population compared to other states.
However, he acknowledged a significant lack of infrastructure and educational institutions.
“We will have to undergo a lot of transformations… last five years, we have constructed new buildings for colleges, secondary and primary schools, and professional institutions like polytechnic and ITIs. We have also come up with our own state university,” he said.
Sangma further informed that the department will issue an advertisement by today or tomorrow for the recruitment of government lower primary schoolteachers.
