Baghmara, Jan 29: Two FIRs have been filed in connection with the sensational theft of a recently discovered fossil in the village of Tolegre in South Garo Hills (SGH).
One FIR was filed by the villagers of Tolegre while the other was filed by social activist from Baghmara, Greneth Sangma. The FIRs sought an investigation into the case of extraction and theft which was a setback to the entire state due to the significance of the fossils.
A police team from the Siju outpost went to the village on Wednesday to verify what exactly took place. While they were unable to meet the headman, they spoke to villagers who confirmed that the fossil had indeed been cut through and stolen.
Despite efforts at conservation of the historically important site, the fossil theft is sure to sting. The lack of surveillance at the site could be a huge hindrance in the efforts of the police and administration in seeking out the culprits behind the theft.
Speaking on the incident, Education Minister and local MLA from Rongara – Siju, Rakkam Sangma called the incident shameful and something that was a huge loss to the entire state. “The fossils were a state treasure and culturally and historically important. It being stolen is a huge loss for all,” said Rakkam.
South Garo Hills SP, Shailendra Bamaniya has confirmed the registration of the case while stating that an investigation is currently under way.
