SHILLONG, Feb 6: VPP president, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Thursday slammed the regional parties for their hunger for power.
Taking a dig at the UDP and HSPDP while addressing an election rally in Mawlaiteng village under Sohiong constituency, Basaiawmoit said regional parties speak against the Congress, BJP and NPP before the elections but do not miss any opportunity to align with them to be in power.
According to him, the regional forces have a history of joining coalition governments in the state, whether it is led by the Congress or the NPP.
The VPP chief recalled that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had castigated the regional parties before the 2023 Assembly polls even when they were part and parcel of the coalition government for five years but the regional parties displayed utter lack of principle by extended their support to the NPP-led Government after the polls.
Basaiawmoit said the political parties are afraid of the VPP after seeing the party’s landslide victory in the Shillong seat last year.
He said the VPP had won the quarter-final after emerging victorious in the Lok Sabha election and their win in the ADC polls will be akin to winning the semi-final.
“I would urge the electorate to continue to support the VPP for another three years to ensure that it will sweep even the 2028 polls to be able to form the government in the state. The people stood with the leaders during the Hill State movement for 18 years till Meghalaya got its Statehood in 1972. I am asking you to put your faith in the VPP till the next Assembly elections,” he added.
